Cochlear Implant in India - My view
Share
Hello! I started this blog to share my experience as a parent of a child who has undergone a cochlear implant procedure. Throughout this journey, I realized that the concept of cochlear implants is still quite new in India, especially outside major cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi. There’s limited information available for parents navigating this process. Compared to countries like the US and Australia, India is still catching up, and many parents have countless questions that often go unanswered.
Cochlear implants can be quite expensive, and not everyone can afford them, whether for their children or themselves if they face hearing issues. The lack of readily available information can be overwhelming for those who do decide to pursue this journey despite financial challenges. I explored every aspect, from deciding to get the implant for my son to choosing the right device.
This blog aims to create a dedicated space for cochlear implant users, parents, and their loved ones in India, addressing our unique challenges. While some government assistance programs exist, their eligibility criteria are often narrow, leaving many to pay out of pocket or rely on insurance, which frequently doesn't cover the full amount.
As I write this, it's been just two days since my three-year-old son was activated. I won’t mention the specific device we chose to ensure that this blog can benefit everyone, regardless of the implant type they select. While device selection does matter to an extent, it’s not the sole focus of this platform.
I hope to see more people join this initiative and share their experiences to help others navigate this journey. I plan to document our progress week by week and provide updates as we move forward. Thank you for joining me, and I hope this effort leads to something greater for the cochlear implant community in India!
